For parents, explaining their child’s autism to others can feel like reopening a wound. They fear not only the lack of support from friends and family, but also the potential for misunderstanding or discrimination. So, how should parents approach this with their relatives and friends?<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/span><\/b><\/p>

Understanding the causes of autism is crucial.<\/span><\/b><\/p>

When explaining to friends and family, parents must first clarify that the cause of autism is not related to parental neglect or overindulgence. Autism is associated with abnormal brain development, which affects the child’s communication skills, thinking and behavior patterns, as well as their ability to understand the thoughts and actions of others. Parents can list the common characteristics of most children with autism, including social difficulties, stubbornness, anxiety, communication difficulties, focus ability, varying levels of activity, atypical emotional responses, physical coordination problems, and different sensory responses.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

\u6b64\u5916\uff0c\u5bb6\u9577\u53ef\u76e1\u91cf\u7559\u610f\u81ea\u9589\u75c7\u7684\u6700\u65b0\u8cc7\u8a0a\uff0c\u4f8b\u5982\u300c\u57f7\u884c\u529f\u80fd\u300d\u3001\u300c\u4e2d\u592e\u7d71\u5408\u300d\u548c\u300c\u5fc3\u667a\u89e3\u8b80\u80fd\u529b\u300d\u7b49\u6982\u5ff5\uff0c\u4e00\u4f86\u53ef\u4ee5\u4ee4\u81ea\u5df1\u66f4\u5bb9\u6613\u660e\u767d\u5b50\u5973\u7684\u6210\u9577\u9700\u8981\uff0c\u7576\u9047\u5230\u89aa\u53cb\u6709\u8208\u8da3\u4e86\u89e3\u66f4\u591a\uff0c\u4fbf\u53ef\u5411\u4ed6\u5011\u6df1\u5165\u89e3\u91cb\u3002\u7576\u5bb6\u9577\u6108\u6e05\u695a\u81ea\u9589\u75c7\uff0c\u4fbf\u6108\u5bb9\u6613\u8b93\u89aa\u53cb\u8a8d\u8b58\u5b69\u5b50\uff0c\u6216\u8a31\u4e00\u8cab\u6b67\u8996\u7684\u773c\u5149\uff0c\u6703\u56e0\u4e86\u89e3\u5f97\u66f4\u591a\u800c\u9010\u6f38\u6d88\u5931\u3002\u5bb6\u9577\u77e5\u8b58\u4e0a\u7684\u88dd\u5099\uff0c\u80fd\u8b93\u89aa\u53cb\u611f\u5230\u5bb6\u9577\u7684\u7a4d\u6975\u548c\u80fd\u529b\u3002<\/span><\/p>

In addition, parents can try to stay updated with the latest information on autism, such as concepts like “executive function”, “central integration”, and “theory of mind”. This can help them better understand their child’s developmental needs. When relatives and friends show interest in learning more, parents can explain these concepts in depth. The more parents understand about autism, the easier it is for relatives and friends to get to know the child. Perhaps the usual discriminatory views will gradually disappear as they understand more. The knowledge parents equip themselves with can make relatives and friends feel the parents’ positivity and capability.<\/span><\/p>

Describe the Child’s Performance with Specific Adjectives<\/span><\/b><\/p>

Furthermore, when parents describe their child, they should use specific and positive adjectives. For example, describe the child as having strong memory (instead of “good at forgetting”), weak focus (instead of “distracted”), unable to understand others’ demands (instead of “disobedient, dragging”), repeating the same actions (instead of “he\/she must…”), or nodding to the beat (instead of “likes music”) and other abstract adjectives. However, explanations\nare just explanations. When parents face their child’s ever-changing behaviors,\nthey may prefer to remove the child (or even themselves) from sensitive\nsituations to reduce the disturbance to relatives and friends. But this also\nreduces the child’s opportunities to adapt to society. Instead, parents can\nactively guide relatives and friends to interact with the child in appropriate\nways. For example, they can positively say, “You can speak a little\nslower”, “The child is very sensitive to sound, let’s speak a little\nquieter”, or “I’m sorry, can I know the schedule first to prepare my\nchild?” If relatives and friends can do this, it’s already a step towards\nsuccess.<\/span><\/p>

The perspectives of\nrelatives and friends need to be broadened. However, the most important thing\nis that parents need to maintain an open and accepting attitude, setting an\nexample for relatives and friends.
